Hazel Crest Homeowners Confront Squatters Demanding Cash to Vacate

Hazel Crest homeowners Keashun May and Macquline King faced a troubling ordeal when squatters occupied their property and demanded payment to leave.

The couple, planning to sell their home, learned from their realtor that unauthorized individuals — with two dogs — had moved in.

Lashawn Rankine, claiming he paid $4,000 in cash and presenting a lease, refused to vacate, forcing the owners to turn to local police.

Police classified the incident as a civil matter, leading the owners toward a prolonged eviction process.

To regain their house, May and King agreed to pay the squatters $2,700 in a “cash-for-keys” deal.

Further investigation linked Rankine to similar squatting cases in Tinley Park and South Holland.

Authorities are now exploring possible charges, while new state legislation—effective January 2026—will empower police to act more quickly against squatters.

Investigations into Rankine continue.

Sandra Alexander Becomes Hazel Crest's First Female Mayor

Sandra Alexander made history on April 1, 2025, becoming Hazel Crest’s first female mayor after decades of civic dedication.

Alexander began her journey as a 911 dispatcher in 1994, later advancing to executive assistant, deputy village clerk, and key administrative roles.

She was the first African American to serve full-time in the village’s administrative office and its first registered, certified municipal clerk.

After retiring in 2018, Alexander led the Hazel Crest Proper Neighborhood Association and was elected village trustee in 2023.

Her election as mayor signals a new era, with major redevelopment projects underway.

Plans include revitalizing the historic Metra station area through an Equitable Transit-Oriented Development Plan, supported by a regional grant.

Residents express pride and optimism, confident that Alexander’s deep roots and relentless commitment will drive community growth and renewed pride.
