Hazel Crest homeowners Keashun May and Macquline King faced a troubling ordeal when squatters occupied their property and demanded payment to leave.
The couple, planning to sell their home, learned from their realtor that unauthorized individuals — with two dogs — had moved in.
Lashawn Rankine, claiming he paid $4,000 in cash and presenting a lease, refused to vacate, forcing the owners to turn to local police.
Police classified the incident as a civil matter, leading the owners toward a prolonged eviction process.
To regain their house, May and King agreed to pay the squatters $2,700 in a “cash-for-keys” deal.
Further investigation linked Rankine to similar squatting cases in Tinley Park and South Holland.
Authorities are now exploring possible charges, while new state legislation—effective January 2026—will empower police to act more quickly against squatters.
Investigations into Rankine continue. Read More... |
